Iran's government is administered by the "Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist" (Velayat-e Faqih), a concept in Twelver Shia Islamic law which holds that until the reappearance of the "infallible Imam Mahdi", at least some of the "religious and social affairs" of the Muslim world should be administered by righteous Shiite jurists (faqih). Three Martyrs flag

This flag was released in Tehran to acknowledge the succession of Mojtaba Khamenei as the "Supreme Leader" successor to his predecessor, his father, Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei, who was martyred/assassinated in an Israeli airstrike early on Feb. 28, 2026. Mojtaba became Iran's third "Supreme Leader" on March 8, 2026.

The top line reads: "I am directly from Haramin"; "haramin" refers to the two holiest cities in Islam in Saudi Arabia: Mecca (where the Muslim's holiest shrine the Kabba is) and Medina (where Islam's prophet Mohammed is buried). Hereby Mojtaba is touting that his "divine right to tule" comes from Islamic spirituality effervescing from Mecca and Medina. The larger center slogan reads: "all three martyrs" meaning "all three heroes" of Shia-Iran, referring to Iran's first "Supreme Leader" (ayatollah "Ruhollah Mostafavi Musavi Khomeini", d. June 3, 1989), the second "Supreme Leader" (ayatollah "Ali Hosseini Khamenei", d. Feb. 28, 2026) and the third Supreme Leader "Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei" (who is believed to be still alive but wounded). Mojtaba is the son of the second Supreme Leader. The bottom line reads: "Your way continues", meaning that the Shia theocracy continues in Iran. As Persian is read right-to-left, this flag's "hoist" side is on the right with a hidden flagpole sleeve there; c. early April 2026. [note: it can be a little confusing to differentiate between similar sounding Khomeini and Khamenei.]

Passing Succession flag

This flag shows Iran's second "Supreme Leader" ayatollah "Ali Hosseini Khamenei" (at the left) handing the national flag of Iran to his son and successor "Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei". This figuratively symbolizes the transfer of the political leadership of Iran from a father to his son. This flag-transfer did not happen literally, as Ali died before Mojtaba had been elected as his successor. To indicate Ali's death, there is a "halo" or "aura" around his head.-- indicating his martyrdom if not an almost "sainthood" status. Ali was martyred/assassinated in an Israeli airstrike early on Feb. 28, 2026. Mojtaba is believed to be still alive although maybe wounded. Mojtaba became Iran's third "Supreme Leader" through an election by the "Assembly of Experts" on March 8, 2026. Both wear a black turban ("Sayyid Ulama") that signals that they are (alleged) descendants of the Muslim prophet Mohammad. The Farsi slogan on the bottom red stripe reads: "Knowledge never leaves the hands of the scholar." Presumably, "scholar" refers to the "Supreme Leader", so I believe this refers to his "infallibility" as a political and Shia-theology leader, and thereby validates the transfer of Iran's political leadership from Ali to his son Mojtaba. The hoist side of this flag is at the right, where there is a hidden flagpole sleeve.
